The Order of the Knights of Malta is the world's oldest and most exclusive order of chivalry, founded in the Holy Land during the Crusades. The compound here is the headquarters of the Italian branch of the order. The square itself, and the church and gardens inside the compound, were designed around 1765 by Piranesi, 18th-century Rome's foremost engraver, you have him to thank for the view. The gardens can be viewed only by appointment.
